Auxerre and its quays
At the heart of the Yonne, Auxerre stretches along the left bank and offers from the Pont Paul-Bert an unrivalled view of the silhouette of Saint-Étienne Cathedral and Saint-Germain Abbey. The flower-filled quays, lined with barges and restaurants, welcome walks at any time. A first drink here, with the setting sun on the pale stone, is sure to charm.
Cathedral and abbey
Saint-Étienne Cathedral, a Gothic masterpiece, conceals a rare Romanesque crypt decorated with a fresco of Christ on a white horse. The neighbouring Saint-Germain Abbey shelters the oldest Carolingian murals in France. An afternoon of culture, broken by a tea break in old Auxerre, makes for a date that leaves lovely images in memory.
Vézelay, the eternal hill
In the south of the département, Vézelay raises its sacred hill. The basilica of Sainte-Marie-Madeleine, a stage of the Santiago way, is a World Heritage site. The cobbled lanes of the village and the view over the Morvan offer a romantic date without pretence. On Lyad, members from the Yonne share their itineraries; it is up to you to find someone to climb the hill with.
